Arvind Kejriwal the Rising Star of Indian Politics

CPM has a lot to learn from the stunning debut  of AAP.  Aam Admi Party’s trump card in the last Delhi assembly election was their promise of a corruption free government and pro people measures. AAP is talking about cultivating a new political culture that the so called pro people parties like the  left front failed do. Back in 1925 ( it can be contested ) when the CPI came into existence, it made a promise –a promise to stand by the side of people to protect their rights.

When parties with such long legacy and history could not bring in change, apparently a novice, AAP, under the leadership of Kejriwal could bring in some optimism to the people who are tired of false promises and corruption.

Well, let’s have a look at the milestones in the life of the man behind AAP-Arvind Kejriwal. He will be known as the hero who stunned the nation by making a spectacular electoral debut in the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections. Kejriwal has defeated Sheila Dikshit in her constituency by around 22,000 votes. His party captured 28 seats out of Delhi’s 70 seats and finished second after BJP (32 seats).

Let’s take a quick look at the rising star of Indian politics, Arvind Kejriwal

  • Arvind Kejriwal resigned from his job of a tax official in 2001 and began working as an anti-corruption activist.
  • He strongly supported India’s Right to Information Act in 2005 and earned the Ramon Magsaysay award for his efforts.
  • He joined Anna Hazare after a few years to support the anti-corruption Lokpal Bill.
  • Their demands of the bill were not accepted and differences crept in between Kejriwal and Anna Hazare. But it brought Kejriwal into the national limelight.
  • Kejriwal formed the Aam Aadmi Party in November 2012.
  • He campaigned without security for his party in Delhi, a rare phenomenon in Delhi’s political scenario.
  • The broom is the party symbol of AAP. Kejriwal’s supporters brandished brooms to signify a clean sweep of India’s decayed politics and wore white Gandhi caps to symbolize an era when politics of honesty and politics of public service was prevalent.
  • He followed US President Barack Obama’s strategy of accepting small donations and collected about 20 crores for his party.
  • Kejriwal and AAP have come under criticism for their economic policies and promises to reverse hikes in water and electricity prices.

Tejpal-A Victim of Political Consipracy

Until the break out of the sexual harassment case, every journalist in India wanted to be in Tarun Tejpal shoes. The Thehalka founder was a role model of every journalist in the country. When we look at the case, everything looks like framed. And he is nothing less than a victim of political conspiracy. It is case that is hijacked and ‘framed’ by the media and Goa police, which falls under a BJP government is all set to ‘trap’ the eminent journalist.

In the bail petition, he says that  “The alleged colleague referred above, continued to party and was completely normal and friendly all throughout her stay in Goa. She went to the Remo Fernandez function which began around 7:30/8:00 pm and which lasted into the late evening,” The victim’s well thought out complaint indicates that she was not disturbed by the incident.

The sting master showed India media a different types of journalism -a jouranalism of fearlessness. In his career he has attacked BJP and RSS many a time and when we see a BJP led government making use of all its resources to put him behind the bars, we have every reason to believe that he is a victim of political conspiracy.

Aadhaar: India’s Ambitious Unique Identification Mission

Aadhaar is India’s ambitious mission to provide 12-digit unique personal identification numbers (PIN) to all its citizens. But with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, this has become the world’s largest single IT project. Now the question is will the project succeed?

IT projects planned on a huge scale often run into complexities and render unsuccessful. The Indian Government’s attempt to provide unique PIN to all citizens faces a similar danger. Aadhaar means foundation. The government has been successful in issuing PIN to about 370 million citizens till July, 2013. It is slated to provide 600 million more PINs by 2014. But this number represents just a small section of the whole population.

The project is being handled by the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI). The organization has been collecting biometric information from the population of the country. The unique PINs will provide the poor and rural population with an official proof of their citizenship and their existence in the country, which many of them lack today. Aadhaar is slated to offer several advantages. The unique PIN will be an easy way to establish identity. This will allow users to avail public and private services that include bank accounts, government food and fuel subsidies, and mobile phone connections.

The PIN will provide identification that is not based on any caste, creed or religion. The PIN is designed to allow the government the opportunity to provide financial services to the poor, uneducated, rural population. As banks require proof of identity, this PIN can be an ideal solution.

Aadhaar will help the citizens to take advantage of Aadhaar-enabled micropayment system. This PIN, valid for a lifetime, will be instrumental in eliminating fake or duplicate identities in private and government records.

But the project also comes with its share of concerns and doubts. The government is far from completing the process of issuing cards to all the citizens. There is no plan to deal with the issues that will rise if an identity theft occurs. Banks are in confusion regarding how this scheme’s payment method will merge with the present systems.

Despite the challenges, the UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani is determined to complete the project. The only problem is that even he is not sure how long it will take for the project to complete.
